As you descend down Hawsker Lane, there is a great view of Whitby Abbey. An iconic landmark on the North Sea coast.

Captain Cook Memorial Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

The museum is in the 17th-century house where the young James Cook lodged as apprentice. It was here that Cook trained as a seaman and acquired those maritime skills which led to his epic voyages of discovery. The museum is packed with interesting artefacts, has loads of information and the guides are extremely knowledgeable.

In three voyages, Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas; mapping lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.

Hadley's Fish and Chips

Highlight • Restaurant

When you visit Whitby, you have to get some Fish & Chips. Hadley's is renowned for being one of the best. While it may not be as historic as certain others in town, it is absolutely delicious here, always cooked to perfection, with friendly staff and great service. Plus it is ideally located near to 199 Steps.

Whitby Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Whitby is a traditional seaside town that is dearly loved by young and old alike. With a glorious golden beach, quirky cobbled streets that wind enticingly through old taverns and pubs — frequented by sailors and smugglers in times gone by — and a bustling harbour overlooked by the striking Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey, it is an intriguing and beautiful place. With connections to Captain Cook and Dracula, too, Whitby truly is a place unlike any other.

Whalebone Arch, Whitby

Highlight • Historical Site

Whaling is a significant part of Whitby's history - as the information board tells you here, between 1753 and 1833 there were 55 Whitby-based whaling ships. This arch celebrates this history. The original arch was erected in 1853; this one was donated by Alaska in 2003. Whitby Abbey is visible on the cliff from here.

Cinder Track Gateway

Highlight • Trail

We just cycled this track from Whitby to Robin Hood Bay (and back).

The track is a lovely ride, away from traffic and close to nature. The surface is a little muddy under the trees at Whitby but the gravel is now fine for all the family the rest of the way.

Look out for either the bike shop/cafe en route, or the little drink/cake stop with an honesty box. Thoroughly recommended.
