Castlerigg Stone Circle

Highlight • Monument

The actual purpose of these megalithic standing stones is hotly debated, with many theories being thrown out. There are 38 of them (but do try counting), and some of them are 10 feet (3m) tall. The origins go back some 4,000 to 5,000 years and it was classified as a protected site way back in 1888. Now it belongs to the National Trust but fortunately it is still free to visit.

There's a 360-degree view from the site so definitely worth admiring.

Little Man (Skiddaw) summit

Here is one of the finest views in the entire national park, arguably better than from its parent peak. Glistening Derwent Water is embraced by the soaring ridgelines and peaks of the southern Lake District, a tumultuous arc of legendary fells. Lakeland at its finest.

Highlight • Natural Monument

This northern fell is a beast; a sprawling behemoth of a mountain. What it lacks in intricacy it makes up for with sheer presence. The Back o’ Skiddaw is wild and remote (and home to England’s highest hostel), and its summit, while barren and rocky, presents a phenomenal view of Lakeland to the south.

There is a bench here which is up in there in my Top 3 'Best Placed Benches' in the Lake District. The one on the way up Burnbank Fell on the Corpse Road is also a contender, as is the one at Friar's Crag Derwent Water. I'm sure I could think of many more too!
