A great view over the estuary including "Hogwarts" (Lancing College)

Shoreham Wooden Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Why not take the time to take in the view, nice little cut-through.

Start of the Downs Link

Highlight • Cycleway

Marked by a sign '37 1/2 Miles to the North Downs Way'. All 23mm tyres abandon, ye who enter here! Actually it's 37.5 miles (60.3 km) of mostly nice gravel trails. I did a good portion of them on my road bike with 25mm winter tyres, which handled it fine, although you feel every bump.

Shoreham Toll Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Shoreham Toll Bridge is the last example of this kind of bridge and has a surprisingly-rich history. In a stunning position over the River Adur, the bridge offers great views and is close to the 10th-century St Nicolas’ Church. The bridge was initially built in 1781. Prior to that people and animals were pulled from one side of the estuary to the other on a flat raft, a perilous journey at times, or had to walk 10 miles to the bridge at Branbur. St Nicolas Church

Highlight • Historical Site

This is a beautifully kept church with Saxon origins and Norman extensions. There are four round Norman arches in the tower containing carvings of limpets, shells, wheel studs in addition to human faces. It has been suggested two of these may be either Henry I and his wife Adeliza or King Steven and his queen Matilda.

Bramber Castle and High Street

Highlight • Settlement

Bramber is a highly scenic village tucked away in the Downs Link and well worth a detour to have a look at the ruins of the castle, which provides a good spot for a picnic or game of frisbee.

The village itself has a pub, a loo and plenty of 18th century cottages. Shops are in neighbouring Upper Beeding.

Great route through Steyning and towards the coast or Brighton Airport. Beautiful road overlooked by the impressive and Gothic looking Lancing College Chapel.

This is the old city airport. Once it played an important part of the WW II, now it acts as a private airplane club. The building has great architecture and character. The café attracts families and cyclists alike. Here you can have have traditional English dishes like poached eggs, English breakfast, tea and homemade cakes. A great meeting point too!
