Barren Tree on the North Shore of Ullswater

Highlight • Viewpoint

Ullswater is the second largest lake in the Lake District. It formed in a glacial trough where the glacier scraped out the valley bottom and then dammed the end with sediment.
Glenridding is at the southern end and Pooley Bridge at the north. Both are great walking bases with plenty of facilities.
The path that follows the western shore is a really nice walk. You can use the steamers which run the length of the lake and stop half way at Howtown to allow an out and back journey.

Pooley Bridge (2020)

Highlight • Viewpoint

Pooley Bridge got a new bridge on 23rd October 2020! The new bridge is 128ft (39 m) in length and replaces the 18th-century stone bridge that was destroyed during Storm Desmond in December 2015. If you look closely you can see the names of people and businesses engraved along the bridge which helped raise money for the project.

This isn’t Penrith, it’s Pooley Bridge.

Pooley Bridge occupies an enviable position at the north eastern tip of Ullswater, where the River Eamont begins its journey to join to River Eden. The village is very popular with visitors to the Lakes, as it's just ten minutes from the M6 and a short bus journey from Penrith train station.

There are many accommodation options, as well as pubs, cafes and restaurants. You can take the Ullswater Steamer down the lake from here and visit Glenridding, Howtown and Aira Force.
