River Mersey

Highlight • River

Once the border between the ancient kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria, the River Mersey is firmly rooted in British history. The river was an important transport connection during the Industrial Revolution which swept from the North of England to the South, and across the world. Unfortunately, its industrial past severely affected the water quality so a big project was launched in 1985 to clean the river. The Mersey flows 70.33 miles (113 km) from Stockport to Liverpool Bay.
