River Leven in Lake District National Park

Highlight (Segment) • River

Nice section of the walk along the River Leven. We stuck to the road as there were sheep in the fields and we had dogs but you can follow the river even closer by taking the footpath through the fields.

Bigland Tarn

Highlight • Natural

Just to the east of the Leven Estuary, Bigland Tarn is a lovely place to take a picnic. There are views to the Coniston Fells, whilst the surrounding land makes for some lovely rural ambles. Nearby Bigland Barrow is one of Wainwright's Outlying Fells and offers splendid views from the lockout tower on its summit.

Bigland Tarn

Highlight • Lake

Measuring 1,066 feet by 738 feet (325 m by 225 m), Bigland Tarn is a pretty lake in Cumbria. Surrounded by layered hills, the lake is situated at 518 feet (158 m). It has many hidden corners amongst the greenery on its banks.

Look out for buzzards and fish popping up to the surface of the lake. Unfortunately, the lake is a midge haven in high summer, so bring midge-repellent spray!
