What to expect on East Shore Trailhead – Shadow Mountain Lake loop from Grand Lake
This route offers a journey through varied terrain, starting with mostly paved surfaces that transition to a mix of dirt, gravel, and blacktop along the East Shore Trail. You'll cycle alongside the sparkling waters of Shadow Mountain Lake, enjoying an alpine environment at around 8,300 feet above sea level, with serene river valleys and national forests. Keep an eye out for wildlife like moose, deer, and osprey, especially near the shore. While largely easy, the northern end of the East Shore Trail, near the Continental Divide trailhead, does feature some short, steep, and rocky hills that might require a bit more effort or even a brief dismount, so be prepared for a few challenging sections.
Planning your visit
This loop is one of the few trails within Rocky Mountain National Park that permits cycling, offering a unique park experience. Be aware that timed entry reservations for Rocky Mountain National Park may be required from May to October. Additionally, some sections of the trail might be closed for elk calving between May 6 and July 12, so check current conditions before you go. Parking is available at the East Shore Trailhead, but it's always wise to arrive early during peak season to secure a spot.
