Bothin Marsh Preserve

Highlight • Natural

This tidal sanctuary runs along the Mill Valley-Sausalito Pathway and the Charles F. McGlashan Pathway. More than 400 species of migratory birds rest here after their long flights, and if you pass through in the early morning or late evening, the sunrises and sunsets reflect beautifully on the surface of this 106-acre marsh.

Tennessee Valley Trailhead

Highlight • Parking

The paved Tennessee Valley road ends here at this popular trailhead, deep in the Marin Headlands. A central junction of several trails heading north or south along the Miwok or other hilly trails, or flat down to the beach

Tennessee Valley Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Tennessee Valley Trail is a wide multi-use path flanked by horse pastures, starting on sandy gravel at Tennessee Beach and turning into a paved road where the picnic area (a former farm) spur merges in, toward the trailhead parking area at the Miwok horse riding stables. Here bikers can either turn north or south on Miwok Trail, south on Marincello Trail, or simply continue straight on the road to Sausalito.

Coastal Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This section of Coastal Trail between Coyote Ridge Trail and Upper Tennessee Valley Trail is locally known as 'Hurt Locker' for its steepness. It is of course fun if you're descending this mostly smooth hardpack/gravel fireroad (except for some deeply eroded gullies cutting across the lower section), offering sweeping views of the emerald Tennessee Valley below, down to it's opening to the Pacific Ocean. And it's comforting to see the sign at the Tennessee Valley intersection that it's only a mere 482 miles along the coastal trail to the Oregon Border from here ...

Coyote Ridge Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The main Coyote Ridge fire road trail runs down the main ridge line. Here, two trails climb up from Green Gulch in the west and cross over into one to the east.

Miwok Trail from Hwy 1 to Coyote Ridge 🚵

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Miwok trail is a very scenic gravel/hardpack fireroad with spectacular views of Southern Marin, Mount Tamalpais, and the San Francisco Bay. This segment is mostly level, rising gently from the highest point on Shoreline Highway 1 to the intersection with Coyote Ridge Trail.

Tip by

7

14.5 km

This upper section of Dias Ridge Trail helps to connect as far over to Muir Woods Road to reduce the ride on Panoramic Highway, which is usually calm but busy on weekends.
Miwok Trail does connect down to the entrance of Muir Woods National Monument, unfortunately that last steep downhill segment is hikers-only single track.
