De Keverberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Kessel is an old Maas village with a rich history. In 1869 they found a Roman stone of the gods when they demolished an old church. This stone was dedicated to Minerva, Hercules and Juno. The remains of an old villa have also been excavated in Kessel-Eik. A late Roman iron helmet with a Christ monogram was even discovered in Kessel, which can now be seen in the Center Céramique in Maastricht. They also found a large copper kettle in Kessel, now in the Limburgs Museum in Venlo.

The Dutch know what a biker needs: cycle paths that are firstly target-oriented, secondly have something to offer in terms of scenery and thirdly are safe because they are decoupled from car traffic. We can still learn a lot from that. The Fietsweg from Venlo to Roermond is a good example: always along the Meuse.

Today we did a very nice round trip on both sides of the Maas. The starting point and destination was Venlo. We took the bike ferry across at Rijekel.
Fantastic weather with a fantastic route - the Dutch are great at "bike paths" 👍👍
Relaxed route and lots of great views.

VENLO on Sunday full of people coming to shop. That's why we drove down the Maas towards Maastricht.
Ate the best Frietjes special 🍟 in the monastery village of Steyl and watched the hustle and bustle in this special place. Via Kessel back to Venlo

Always along the Meuse (a small detour) with a few short, unplanned detours 🤭!
There was also a free field shower (I got a full blown shower), which wasn't so bad considering today's temperatures 😆! We took a short detour in Venlo with a light lunch 🥗 and returned fortified!

Ferry from Beesel to Kessel €2.50 for 2 people with a bicycle

In the immediate vicinity of Venlo you have to expect scooter riders (on the cycle paths) who don't really pay attention and/or slow down when there are narrow spots 😡

Venlo was already logistically important for the Romans. Unfortunately, the Germans continued this with a border incident and subsequent military advance to the west. The destruction of the Second World War was considerable, the reconstruction pragmatic but not really attractive. Running like mad through shopping areas is not our thing anyway (that would be easier here in Barmen). So we …
