St. Martin Church in Au near Bad Aibling

Highlight • Religious Site

The Christmas flu shouldn't be missed. It initially belonged as a branch church to the original parish of Elbach and was first mentioned in 1390 when it came to the Scheyern monastery. In 1498 it was raised to a parish church with the branch churches of Lippertskirchen, Feilnbach, Wiechs, Litzldorf and Kleinholzhausen. After the founding of the "Arch Brotherhood of Mary of Consolation" a new building was built on the site of the late Gothic church. It was built in 1706 by master builder Abraham Millauer according to a design by architect Wolfgang Dientzenhofer in the Baroque style, with the late Gothic tower initially being retained unchanged. It was not until 1736 that he received a pointed helmet. Architecturally, it is a hall building with a semi-circular closed chancel and a lunette barrel. The stucco with acanthus tendrils, cartouches, rosettes, etc. dates from the time of construction. The ceiling painting was created by the Munich painter Thomas Guggenberger in 1864.
From 2016 to 2018 the church was thoroughly restored inside and out.

St. Sebastian Church at Marienplatz

Highlight • Religious Site

Saint Sebastian has been highly venerated among the German people since ancient times, as he is considered the patron saint against infectious diseases. When the plague raged in Bavaria in 1564, a small chapel was built in his honor in Aibling. The plague returned again in the wake of the Thirty Years' War. Once again, the citizens of Aibling turned to Saint Sebastian for help, contributing 4,000 guilders in 1634 to build a church in his honor. The lion's share of the funds was provided by the local vintner, Veit Katzl. The Saint Sebastian Brotherhood was also established at this time, and its main festival is celebrated every year on Saint Sebastian's Day with lively participation from the community. During the great fire of 1765, the church burned to the ground, leaving only the outer walls standing, but it was immediately rebuilt through collections and contributions from other churches.

When the Aiblingen church became a parish church, the rectory remained in Ellmosen for a long time. It was not until 1482, when the Gundelhofer brothers gave the parish church a parlor on the Hofberg, did the parish court become the same, and the priest moved to Aibling. The parish church stands high above the city, a monumental stone staircase leads up from the city. Most of the current church dates from the first half of the 15th century.
