Acropolis of Velia

Highlight • Historical Site

The excavations of Velia for the Romans or Elea for the Greeks represent one of the jewels of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. The remains of this ancient city are found in the territory of Ascea Marina, an important seaside resort located between Agropoli and Palinuro. The happy geographical position of Velia (Elea), located at the center of the ancient trade routes between Greece and Etruria, made it very rich and powerful. Its excavations today Porta Rosa enrich the offer of seaside tourism in the coastal Cilento.
Sea and culture is the golden combination that every Italian town can offer and that makes a holiday in our country unique. Tourists can immerse themselves in the morning in the crystalline sea of Agropoli, Santa Maria di Castellabate, Acciaroli, Pioppi, Capo Palinuro or Marina di Camerota and in the afternoon they can relive the thrill of walking through the streets or the agora (the forum) of Velia. where certainly also great philosophers of the Eleatic school such as Parmenides, Zeno and Melisso walked. The ancient acropolis of Elea (Velia), where today an interesting medieval fortification stands, hosts very suggestive theatrical performances in the open. One of the highlights of these excavations is the famous Porta Rosa, the only example of a 4th-century Greek arch, a true architectural jewel of the time.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta (Celso)

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of Celso is dedicated to the Madonna dell'Assunta. On the façade, in local stone and adorned with terracotta frames, there is the main door that leads into the church with three naves.
Of particular note are the carved stone baptismal font from 1771 and a stone stoup from 1625. The bell tower, very low compared to the church, was built in the 18th century.

Celso (Pollica)

Highlight • Settlement

The origin of Celso is linked to the figure of some families from Pollica who, to escape the infighting of their country, took refuge higher up the hill: it still retains the ancient urban structure, which makes it a particularly characteristic place, especially in the districts of San Biase and Valle. Many houses are adorned with defensive towers, placed to guard massive driveways, which allow the passage of only one person at a time.

Among the places of historical interest there is the Mazziotti Baronial Palace, now a national monument. Matteo Mazziotti was born here, a distinguished scholar of the Cilento Risorgimento and a parliamentarian in the post-war period.
The Church of Celso is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. Built in local stone and decorated with terracotta frames, it has a very low bell tower compared to the architectural complex, built in the eighteenth century.
The small church of San Giovanni, built in the early 1500s, stands on the rural road towards Casal Velino. It belongs to the nucleus of the ancient village of Praganito, a village abandoned in the 12th century.
The splendid Convent of Constantinople was built in the 15th century. by some refugees from Constantinople who, having fled from Mohammed II, wanted to build a place of worship dedicated to the Madonna. In 1610, Antonio Griso, lord of the place, entrusted the chapel to the Augustinian friars who founded a convent there, suppressed after about a decade for lack of resources.

The construction of the Franciscan Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie began in 1611 and ended in 1625.
After numerous events that repeatedly decreed its closure and reopening, it has been operating continuously since 1931, the year in which it was restored, embellished and reactivated by Father Vincenzo Riccio da Siano.
The church houses four altars on each side wall of which three are surmounted by the coat of arms of the Capano family.
The paintings on the altars on the sides of the entrance are of particular importance and are attributed to the Melancholy, a follower of Luca Giordano.
The wooden coffered ceiling, the work of Giuseppe Marrocco da Celso, houses in the center a canvas by M. Cilento, depicting the Assumption.
Finally, the wooden choir of the 18th century, the organ from 1741, the sacristy with a wooden ceiling, a large cabinet from 1772 and a shell-shaped washbasin in carved stone are noteworthy.
