Alkaff Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Alkaff Bridge, a pedestrian bridge in Singapore, stretches across the Singapore River at Robertson Quay in the Central Area. This steel truss bridge, resembling a tongkang, is named after the affluent Alkaff family.

Built in 1997 as part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority's plan, the bridge, completed in 1999, is one of three footbridges at Robertson Quay, along with Robertson Bridge and Jiak Kim Bridge, enhancing pedestrian connectivity along the Singapore River banks.

It was artistically painted by Pacita Abad, an internationally acclaimed visual artist.

Clarke Quay

Highlight • Settlement

Clarke Quay is a nightlife district on the Singapore River.

From the early 1800s, Clarke Quay served as a dock for loading and unloading cargoes for the warehouses and trading houses along the Singapore River. After relocation of the harbor activities, the district went through a decline.

In 1989 it was declared a National Monument Reserve, renovated and transformed into a commercial and entertainment district.

Cavenagh Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Cavenagh Bridge connects the colonial district with the business district. Its history dates back to 1868. Initially, the bridge was named Edinburgh Bridge to commemorate the visit to the Duke of Edinburgh. Later it was renamed in honor of Sir Lieutenant General William Orfeur Cavenagh, the last Governor of the Strait Settlement. It was the last major work of the Indian prisoners stationed in Singapore.
The steel structure of the bridge was shipped from Glasgow to Singapore. At the beginning, the bridge was also open to trams, but from 1909 most of the traffic was transferred to the Anderson Bridge, and today the Cavenagh Bridge is a pure pedestrian bridge. Before the bridge was built, it was only possible to get to the colonial district by boat or take a longer detour.
In 1987 it was restored and in 1990 the lighting was added. The Cavenagh Bridge is the oldest in Singapore and the only suspension bridge in the city. It was designed by John Turnball Thomson.
