The Nestos Delta is one of the most important breeding grounds for rare bird species and a stopover for migratory birds. It is popular with ornithologists as a wintering area for a wide variety of water birds, songbirds and birds of prey. Over 250 species of birds have been described in the Nestos Delta, including rare and endangered species. A visit to the alluvial forests of the delta is also worthwhile for non-ornithologists. The best starting point is the now closed Nestos Cafe near Chysoupolis (follow the signs in the center of Chrysoupolis). From the parking lot you can go hiking along the dam or in the river yourself.
