Ancient Bathhouse at Butrint

Highlight • Historical Site

One of Butrint's best-preserved structures is the semi-circular theatre. It lies just below the Acropolis and faces the Vivari Canal. Right next to it is the Temple of Asklepios. The theater was built in the 3rd century BC. Built in Greek style, possibly on the walls of an older and smaller theatre. The auditorium (lat. Cavea) was considerably expanded. The seats were divided hierarchically; the lowest seats, and thus those closest to the stage, belonged to the higher classes of the city. This is best illustrated by the many footrests in this series, which are decorated with lion motifs. The auditorium is divided into five sectors (gr. kerkides), each of which has 13 rows of seats.

Butrint near Saranda was an ancient Greek-Albanian heavily fortified settlement and later became an interesting Venetian trading center.
This ruined city is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The proximity to the island of Corfu is funny. It is only a stone's throw away, 2 km away.

Unfortunately, the mosaic that is advertised in every travel guide cannot be seen. It is apparently only covered once a year.

Today we took the ferry to Albania. There we visited the ruins of Butrint. The Romans, Byzantines and Venetians lived there, but unfortunately an earthquake destroyed everything. It was very interesting, but also crowded 👍
