June 11, 2025,Der Fränkische Dünenweg - Ostsee-Feeling in Mittelfranken
Today, it was all about finding a nearby highlight and hiking it. We quickly consulted Komoot and got the answer: the sand dunes in Nuremberg's Reichswald forest. To make it a sufficiently long loop, we added a few ponds, lush blueberry fields, and beautiful forest trails. And the highly recommended hike was complete.

Sand dunes . Yes .
I know .
North Sea - Franconian Dünenweg and so ... Pustekuchen - directly at Altdorf there is a 40m high drifting sand dune and the Wolfsgrube - also called the "Great Sand Hell" according to Google.

Beautiful circular hike over the Franconian dune path. From km 5 - 7.5 km the hiking trail is a bit tepid and then again varied along the Röthenbach. Highlight sand dunes are 🔝 and definitely worth a hike.
For the hike I would give 3 - 4 stars ⭐️. Conclusion, in the Nuremberg/Altdorf area short journey time and a lot …

Today, a hike along the Franconian Dune Trail in the Nuremberg Reichswald forest south of Leinburg 🌳⏳️🥾.
Starting in a Mini 🅿️ at St. 2240, near the A3 Altdorf/Leinburg exit, we continued along the Franconian Dune Trail ⏳️💚, just a few meters away.
After a short stretch, the trail led along a sand dune covered in heather ⏳️🌸.
We then …

Thanks @Andrea_Herpich for the inspiration on this wonderful hike. 😊
The route leads mainly on shady forest and forest roads from Ungelstetten to the sand dunes in Nuremberg's Reichswald near Altdorf. The up to 40 m thick drifting sand dunes were created during the last ice age. The sand used to be mined, today the entire site is NSG.
And …

Very interesting round - great sand dunes - really beautiful forest paths - a nice stop at the end - all in all a success

A nice tour with lots of sand 😁 which had its good side because you didn't slip 😂😉😂

Why go far away when Franconia has a dune path with large dunes? Okay, there's a bit of a lack of water, but otherwise it felt almost like Arcachon on the Atlantic 😉😎.
... would they have had cake as good as Ungelstetten? The banana split was very good, anyway. 😋
