View of Veitshöchheim

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Ludwig Volk Footbridge is a 248-meter-long pedestrian bridge that spans the Main River at kilometer 243.79 and connects the two Lower Franconian communities of Margetshöchheim and Veitshöchheim.

As early as the mid-20th century, a ferry connection existed across the Main River between Veitshöchheim and Margetshöchheim, near the town center of Veitshöchheim. Due to a temporary disruption to ferry service, Margetshöchheim's mayor, Ludwig Volk, commissioned the construction of a replacement pedestrian bridge as a connection to Veitshöchheim in the mid-1960s. The construction was primarily funded by donations. The pedestrian bridge, located near the town center of Margetshöchheim, was opened on July 24, 1967.

The two river piers and the superstructure in the side spans are located in the shipping hazard zone. Component failure is possible in the event of a ship impact. This led to the planning of a replacement structure in the 2000s. The new structure will be 311 m long and will be located at kilometer mark 244.387 of the Main River, near the old ferry crossing. The river bridge, a 112 m long suspension bridge with pylons spaced 124 m apart, will span the Main River at a crossing angle of 73°. Construction began in autumn 2020 and was scheduled to be completed in early 2022. The demolition of the Ludwig-Volk-Steg was scheduled for spring 2022. Of the €8.4 million construction costs for the entire project, 48% will be covered by the Federal Republic of Germany, as the authority responsible for the Main Federal Waterway.

According to a press release dated August 2, 2022, from the Aschaffenburg Waterway Construction Office, the construction contract was unilaterally terminated by the construction company. Therefore, completion was delayed (as of July 2024).

The new Main Bridge ("Höchheim Bridge") between Veitshöchheim and Margetshöchheim was officially opened to pedestrians and cyclists on November 5, 2024, after four years of construction. Margetshöchheim Mayor Waldemar Brohm and his Veitshöchheim colleague Jürgen Götz officially opened it during a small ceremony.

The new Höchheim Bridge is 311 meters long, 112 meters of which cross the Main River without supports.

On January 20, 2025, the old Ludwig-Volk Bridge was closed after almost 58 years. Work began in February 2025 to prepare for the dismantling of the Ludwig-Volk-Steg.

The Mainsteg should actually be usable from September/October 2022. However, the construction company stopped the work shortly before completion and has not resumed to date (February 2023).

Old Town of Veitshöchheim

Highlight • Historical Site

Of course we know the Rococo garden and of course the Main Franconia halls with the big events, like the "Carnival in Franconia". Quite independently, however, the place itself with its charming old town, the beautiful Main promenade and not to forget the gastronomy is always worth a visit!
