The Lüneburg Heath in Undeloh-Wesel is a true natural paradise that impresses with its impressive landscape and biological diversity. The area is characterized by picturesque dune fields as well as streams and dry valleys that serve as the source of numerous streams. This area is of outstanding importance for biotope and species protection and is an indispensable part of the north-west European Geest.
Particularly worthy of mention is the nature reserve that is home to one of the last black grouse populations in Germany. These heath areas, which were created by historical heath farming, are among the largest contiguous heaths in north-west Europe.
During our visit, despite our binoculars, we were unfortunately unable to spot any black grouse. Instead, we were delighted by great spotted woodpeckers, cuckoos and tree pipits. The heath is also full of life on the ground - lizards and toads crossed our hiking trails and amazed us.
In May, the heath, which has been declared a nature reserve, appeared to us at first glance in a rather brown color. But if you look more closely, you can see the blooming splendor between the heather plants and in the many biotopes with sandy grassland areas. A variety of insects roam here, enriching the heath's ecosystem and providing a lively nature experience.
The visit to the Lüneburg Heath, especially in Undeloh-Wesel, was therefore once again not only a visual pleasure this year, but also a wonderful opportunity to experience the local flora and fauna up close and to recognize the importance of nature conservation.
