Highlight • Rest Area

In addition to the lawn mill island and the Oberaue, paradise is a park area of the Volkspark Oberaue. There is a small sandpit, benches and the goddess sculptures "Klotho", "Lachesis" and "Atropos".

Old Saale Bridge, Jena-Burgau

Highlight • Bridge

The Alte Jena-Burgau bridge is a 142.4 meter long stone arch bridge from 1534, which spans the Saale at the Jena districts Burgau and Lobeda. (also only Wikipedia ;-)

But it is really nice, especially in winter

Part of the D4 cycle path (Mittelland Thuringia cycle path) ATTENTION in the direction of Stadtroda, you can quickly miss the bend (left) into the town center when descending.

Zeitzgrund Trail

Highlight • Trail

Gravel road, which is suitable for gravel bikes. I question the suitability for racing bikes here.

Janis Mill

Highlight • Restaurant

Very tasty cuisine. Luckily we were pre-registered with a larger number of hikers, so all the dumplings were already ready!

Ziegenmühle

Highlight • Restaurant

Definitely worth a stop & delicious food.

Contrary to other opinions, the Zeitzgrund is easily accessible by racing bike to the Janismühle. You have to have a good day because sometimes there are too many visitors (similar to the Mühltal).

Johannis Gate – Part of the Old City Wall

Highlight • Historical Site

The Johannistor is the only remaining city gate in Jena. As part of the old city wall, the tower is connected to the Powder Tower via a reconstructed battlement.

Pulverturm

Highlight • Castle

The city area, which slopes gently from west to east toward the Saale River, was surrounded by a city wall from around 1300. It was 12 meters high and 2 meters wide. Four corner towers and twelve shell towers served as defenses. The city could be entered through three city gates controlled by city guards: the Saaltor in the east, the Johannistor in the west, and the Löbdertor in the south. Today, three corner towers remain, their names indicating their later use or construction: the Powder Tower in the northwest, at the highest point of the city fortifications, the Anatomy Tower in the southwest, and the Red Tower in the southeast. Only the foundations of the castle tower on the current university building remain. The Saaltor and Löbdertor were demolished in the 19th century. Only the Johannistor has survived the changes of time to this day.

Around 1500, the approximately 4,000 inhabitants of the city of Jena lived in small farmsteads consisting of residential buildings, stables, and workshops.
