Schlösserbrücke, Erfurt

Highlight • Bridge

The Schlösserbrücke is located in the Schlösserstraße in Erfurt and leads over the Breitstrom, a branch of the Gera. During the Second World War the bridge was badly damaged and later rebuilt and reinforced. Today there is even a tram over it. Many day trippers and lovers immortalize their love with a lock and thus live up to the name of the bridge.

The Neue Mühle is a technical museum on the Schlösserbrücke in the Thuringian capital Erfurt. It is located on a branch of the small river Gera, which operates the mill's hydropower plant. It contains a grain mill with an undershot Zuppinger water wheel and is the last functioning mill from the former 60 in the city. It has been named "New Mill" since it was rebuilt after the fire of 1735.

The Roman, Fish Market, Erfurt

Roland or Roman? - The statue at the Fish Market is being re-erected today and immediately wrapped.
It had disappeared from the cityscape for almost exactly a year - this morning the Roman statue at the Fish Market is being re-erected. During the extensive construction work last year, the standing figure, along with its stele and base, had to be dismantled and stored for safety reasons. Cracks in the pedestal suggested that the figure's stability was at risk.

Since then, the artwork has been stored at the Erfurt-based company Nüthen Restorations. Over the past few months, they have carried out conservation and stone-repair work on the pedestal and capital. The base, remnants of which can still be seen at the Fish Market, also had to be completely replaced.

"Roman" or "Roland"? This question is often answered with a shrug, even among the residents of Erfurt. From 1448 onwards, there was a statue of Saint Martin in the fish market, associated with St. Martin's Church. Its remains were archaeologically discovered during construction work. Saint Martin is the patron saint of the city of Mainz and the Mainz diocese, which also formally exercised sovereignty over Erfurt. The statue was torn down in 1525 during an uprising against the Electorate of Mainz, at the instigation of the Erfurt council. In 1591, the Archbishop of Mainz pressed for the erection of a new statue of Saint Martin. The Dutch sculptor Israel von Milla, who was based in Erfurt, was commissioned for the task.

Erfurt Fish Market

Highlight • Historical Site

On the northern edge of the fish market in Erfurt you will find the "Haus zum Breiten Herd", one of the most important Renaissance houses in Erfurt. In 1882, the façade was renewed and lush neo-Renaissance details added. Both façade styles unite at the "Haus zum Breiten Herd" to a successful symbiosis, which is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Germany.

Erfurt Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

The neo-Gothic town hall at the fish market was built 1870-1874. Its origins date back to the 11th century. Well-preserved murals depict stories from the life of Luther. In the ballroom pictures of the history of Erfurt can be seen. The town hall can be visited as part of guided tours.

Erfurt Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

The Erfurt Cathedral (formerly also called Marienkirche or Propsteikirche Beatae Mariae Virginis) is the most important and oldest church building in Erfurt. It is 81.26 m high [1] and, with the Gloriosa, has the largest free-swinging bell in the world from the Middle Ages. The cathedral only served as a bishopric for a short time in the middle of the 8th century and was the seat of the collegiate monastery of St. Mary throughout the Middle Ages until the early 19th century. Since 1994 it has been the cathedral of the newly created diocese of Erfurt and the seat of the cathedral chapter.

Erfurt Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The old town is simply beautiful. No matter how often you stroll through the streets and alleys, you always find something new. My personal highlight is the Krämerbrücke.

The Breitstrom arises just behind the Long Bridge in the center of Erfurt from the confluence of the Bergstrom and Walkstrom. The broad stream flows past the New Mill, under the Castle Bridge, under the Rathausbrücke, under the Krämerbrücke and under the Lehmannsbrücke. It also branches into a few separate arms, but they all run close together. In Venice in the north of the old town, the branch of the river known as Wilde Gera, coming from the east, used to flow into the Breitstrom, from which the Gera arises again. However, the Wilde Gera has been filled in since 1898. North of Erfurt's old town, the river is again referred to as the Gera.
