Friedrichshöhe Village and Thuringian Forest Nature Park Center

Highlight • Settlement

The idyllic Friedrichshöhe is located at 800 meters directly on the Rennsteig and at the end of a cul-de-sac. Surrounded by forests, it offers distant views, meadows, a raised moor, rustic restaurants and, last but not least, the information point of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. The village was founded in 1725 by glassmakers and received its name from the sovereign of the Duchy of Saxony-Hildburghausen, Ernst-Friedrich I. Until 1989, Friedrichshöhe was the smallest community in the GDR with 32 inhabitants. The building in the town center, recognizable by its clock tower, housed one of the last single-class schools in the GDR until 1961.

The charcoal kiln hut on the Rennsteig trail in Friedrichshöhe had become dilapidated. Storms, rain, and snow had taken their toll. In the autumn of 2020, the Thuringian Forest Nature Park maintenance team took on its restoration. After it was able to provide a safe haven for hikers again during the winter, the team installed an information panel in 2021 detailing the history of charcoal burning and the historic charcoal kiln sites along the Rennsteig. Friedrichshöhe Mountain Meadows and Moor Educational Trail

The circular route around the picturesque Friedrichshöhe is not new. I have walked it many times on various tours. I will just let the highlights along the route speak for themselves.

But the Thuringian Forest Nature Park has put in a lot of effort and designated the route around Friedrichshöhe as a mountain meadow and moor nature trail. At prominent points there are brand new information boards about forest and meadow plants, the raised moor area and the animals found there. Much of what is described on the boards can be seen, smelled and/or touched. This makes the tour a great experience for adults and children alike. A school lesson in nature. The great views are an added bonus.
