Basedower Canal Bridge (closed due to new construction)

Highlight • Bridge

From the rustic canal bridge, you have great views of the Lanzer See. Unfortunately, it has aged and is to be replaced by a new construction soon. A replacement construction of the road bridge is planned from 2022 with traffic release in 2024. But unlike the bridge near Buchhorst, the bridge near Basedow is not to be rebuilt in the same place. To keep the traffic to the campsite and the restaurant open, it was possible to plan the replacement construction approximately 15 meters south of the existing route. This makes it possible for the existing bridge to continue to be used for the duration of the construction period.

Lauenburg Lock

Highlight • Structure

The Lauenburg lock is the most modern and longest lock on the Elbe-Lübeck canal. It is the last (first) lock to be taken on the way to the Elbe (Baltic Sea).

Between the lock Lauenburg and the Elbe are the last 1.5 kilometers of the Elbe-Lübeck-Kanal, which pull through the Lauenburg harbor. This section has a maximum speed of four kilometers per hour.

Lauenburg Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The lower town of the old shipping town of Lauenburg is worth a trip. The lower town is at risk from every powerful Elbe flood. The water levels are marked at one point. The last floods were a disaster for every owner. People who had recently renovated had to start all over again.
The lower town is home to many artisans and many restaurants. There is a lot to discover.

It's also worth taking a long walk along the Elbe to the former match factory (now a youth hostel), the winter pictures come from there (05.02.2012). The way back takes you through the old town or vice versa. If you dare, go from the lower town up to the castle. You will be rewarded with a wonderful view at the top.

Lauenburg is the home port of the steam-powered paddle steamer Kaiser-Wilhelm.

The best view of Lauenburg is from Hohnstorf.

Lauenburg Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

Lauenburg is a great destination on every bike tour. There are accommodations from the youth hostel over private rooms to the hotel - for every taste and budget. Above all, Lauenburg is a really picturesque place. Alone the old town on the banks of the Elbe with their leaning half-timbered houses is unique. An adventure is a ride on the last remaining coal-powered paddle steamer over the Elbe. There is also a lot to discover in the city.

The Elbe-Lübeck Canal begins/ends here in Lauenburg. From the Lauenburg canal bridge you have great views of the canal in both directions.

The Elbe-Lübeck Canal was opened in 1900. It is 61 km long and connects the Baltic Sea via the Trave with the Elbe near Lauenburg. It thus secures the connection of the Lübeck ports to the European inland waterway network. There are also smaller ports and transhipment points along the canal. With seven locks, the canal overcomes the heights between the Baltic Sea and the Elbe.
