Bridge over the Alster

Highlight • Bridge

The Alster hiking trail is always beautiful. Some places are difficult to see, please show mutual consideration.

Alsterwanderweg

Highlight • Trail

Unfortunately, one has to say: The Alster hiking trail is beautiful - and therefore something like the "Touri standard program"! Although it is not so much tourists who get lost here - but the locals also appreciate the area! Rightly so!

Upper Alster Trail

Highlight • Trail

There is not much to hear from the city noise here. The Alsterwanderweg winds to the left, sometimes to the right of the Alster he leads directly into the center of Hamburg.

Upper Alster Trail

Very nice section on the Alster. Apart from the racing bike, every type of bike can be used. Beware some confusing / poorly visible curves.

Fish Ladder at Poppenbüttel Lock

Highlight • Structure

For cyclists and hikers on the Alsterwanderweg the lock is either a popular destination (or start) or a break on the way. The here dammed Alster forms a small lake in front of the lock, on which not only waterfowl feel good in good weather, but also the various water recreational athletes. You have the opportunity either on one of the two sides of the lock their pleasure to pursue - or: out of the water, transport the boat over the lock and back into the water. Continue down the river or upstream.

Directly at the lock is the "Locks", a popular excursion restaurant. In good weather, the large outdoor terrace overlooking the lock is a true hotspot. And now in the spring we could even see the castle Henneberg through the leafless tall trees. A castle in Hamburg? Yes, even a real one, as you imagine in the picture book. Only a little smaller. In summer it is not visible, hidden by the green foliage.

Alsterwanderweg

Highlight • Trail

The Alster hiking trail is one of the most popular walking routes in Hamburg. The route from the city center to the far north of the Hanseatic city leads past Wilhelminian style villas and allotment gardens, floodplain meadows and parks.

Alster Canals

Highlight • River

From the Fuhlsbüttel lock, the bed of the Alster no longer has its original character, but rather resembles a canal. The natural course was straightened and the banks bordered. Together with other (also canalised) tributaries (Isebek, Goldbek, Eilbek), canals and ponds, a network of waterways is formed that runs through several districts of Hambugr. Of course, the plots on the water are popular with the people of Hamburg, so that you can visit many villas from the water. Due to the regulation of the flow of the Alster lakes, there are no currents in the entire area. In addition, the area is hardly used by motor boats (you need a separate permit, which is only granted very reluctantly) so that the only noticeable shipping traffic comes from the Alster excursion boats (Alster steamers). When the weather is good, the area is popular with water sports enthusiasts of all kinds. Sailors cavort on the Outer Alster, canoeists, rowers, lovers in pedal boats and recently also stand up paddlers ride in the canals. Several boat rentals offer their services and various clubs have their boathouses in this area.

Alster Canal

Highlight • River

Riding along the Alsterkanal is my preferred way to get to the city center. It's relatively quiet here compared to the street and you also get to see something.

A great thing with the gravel bike in any weather!

The title comes from the fact that every Hamburg resident has probably done this tour or parts of it a hundred times! But it's still always nice

Today we traveled along the Alster Lake from Schleswig-Holstein to the Outer Alster Lake in the heart of Hamburg.
A charming landscape accompanied us: hills, moors, ancient trees 🌳, and later, the impressive gardens of Hamburg villas bordering the waterfront. If you haven't been here yet, you're definitely missing out.
