Lenzen Elbe Floodplain Conservation Project Information Board

Highlight • Rest Area

In the Lenzener Elbtalaue, the Elbe has regained 420 hectares of floodplains in recent years. Until a few years ago, the former floodplain areas were cut off from the river by the construction of the dyke and were used intensively for agriculture. As part of a large-scale nature conservation project, a 6 km long new dyke was built, which is up to 1.3 km away from the river. As a result, the old dyke, which was very close to the river, was removed in 6 places at approx. 200 to 500 m. In the event of a flood, the water can now enter the newly gained floodplain through these "dyke slits". In the Lenzener Elbtalaue, a near-natural floodplain landscape is developing as a result.
Further information on the dike relocation can be found here: burg-lenzen.de/burg_lenzen/projekte/naturschutzgrossprojekt/naturschutzgrossprojekt.html

The border tower was built in the early 1980s. The upper floor was equipped with signal and communication systems. It was therefore of central importance in monitoring the border section. The original equipment is no longer there. A staircase now leads to the roof of the tower and offers a beautiful view of the Elbe. Information boards provide information about the tower and the former border.

Former Elbe Dike in Brandenburgische Elbtalaue

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

The former dike of the Elbe, which got the masses of water at high tide because of the Elb-Knick and the tens of thousands of sandbags needed to stabilize the great Elbe flood, was abandoned in favor of more nature-related flood protection. With the dike relocation and breakthrough of the original dyke to several sections, the area is flooded during floods and an alluvial forest is to be created. For this purpose, thousands of seedlings of hardwood and softwood meadow trees were preferred and planted. The success of the large-scale project is already evident, as many birds that disappeared in the area have already returned.
Due to the protection of the breeding grounds, only a small part of the former dyke near the Elbe is easy to navigate and ride on (bicycle).
