The construction of the guild and dance house was to be completed for the visit of King Maximilian I in 1498. The rooms were intended for the celebrations and sessions of the Reichstag, which the then king had called. Since these could not be completed in time, the Reichstag had to meet in the courthouse. Bad for the king, who complained about a lack of space in his meeting rooms, good for the guilds and citizens of the city, who were allowed to dance and celebrate in the Kornhaus after its completion.
The music was followed by laughter and applause, because from 1770 to 1824 the Kornhaus was transformed into a stage for professional actors who presented classical plays and comedies here. With the founding of the city theater and the relocation of the ensemble, peace returned to the Kornhaus in the middle of the 19th century. Until the Second World War it served as a granary for grain traders.
After reconstruction between 1969 and 1971, life returned to the building with the striking stepped gables. Today, the Centre Culturel Français, an ice cream parlor and some pretty shops are located there.
