Maare-Mosel Cycle Route
Family time on a bike tour along a disused railway line
Almost no inclines, but plenty of adventure spots along the way – this Eifel bike tour from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues (58.5 km) is perfect for a family outing. Everyone cycles along at a leisurely pace, and even children can manage the route. The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route runs along a former railway line. Who'll be first to the top? A short race at the beginning leads up to the viaduct near Daun – the first and only challenge is mastered. With a stunning panoramic view of the Eifel, the little ones can catch their breath for a bit, then the next adventure awaits.
There's great cheering at the "Großes Schlitzohr" (Great Slacker), as it's the second-longest bike tunnel in Germany – so turn on the lights and off we go. The bike tour continues at a relaxed pace through beech forests and past glittering maars. No car noise, just the gentle rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the laughter of children.

From Bernkastel-Kues, a bike bus takes you back to the starting point. The return trip can be booked in advance.

The section between Gillenfeld and Eckfeld is very nice, especially if you are looking forward to the cake in Eckfeld ;-)

Anyone who cycles along the Maare Mosel cycle path will see the mighty viaduct from below and cycle underneath it.

Strohner Lava Bomb

Highlight • Natural Monument

The almost 120 ton heavy “lava bomb” from Strohn is a geological specialty. With its diameter of almost five meters, it is an impressive, unique testimony to earlier volcanic activity in the Eifel. During a blast in the Wartgesberg quarry in 1969, it detached itself from the quarry wall from 15 meters high. In the winter of 1980/81, citizens of Strohn pulled them on an iron plate with a bulldozer over the frozen blanket of snow to their current location.

The Alfbach gorge near Strohn is called "Strohner Schweiz" (Strohn's Switzerland) because of its steep slopes and wildly romantic landscape. From a bench, you can enjoy a beautiful view down to the stream. You can also walk down the footpath and cross the stream on the nearby bridge.

Schutzalf Memorial Bell Tower

Highlight • Monument

Until the end of the 19th century, the disappeared town of Schutzalf was located in the beautiful Alfbach valley, about one and a half kilometers east of Mückeln. The former hamlet, consisting of three or four houses and a chapel with a brother's apartment, was located between the Sprinker Hof and the Sprinker Mühle, both of which were owned by the Augustinian monastery Springiersbach, which was founded in the early 12th century.

The large stones lying here are the old altar stones from the Schutzalf chapel, of which a small part of the foundation can still be seen.
