Marschiertor, Aachen

Highlight • Historical Site

The Marschiertor was part of the outer ring of Aachen's fortifications and withstood sieges and attacks for centuries. When the fortress walls were demolished during the expansion of Aachen, the Marschiertor escaped destruction and was preserved. It was badly damaged in the Second World War, but was later carefully repaired.

The carving Pennsoldat is reminiscent of the Aachen city militia, which was stationed here to guard the marching gate. To supplement their meager military pay, the guards carved thin wooden tillers (dialectal Penn) for shoe soles. Aachen's oldest carnival club was founded on March 3, 1857 under the name Stadtgarde "Öcher Penn" von 1857 e.V. as a satire on the armed city soldiers, popularly known as Pennsoldaten. See plaque on the wall of the city gate

View of the Marschiertor gate

Highlight • Monument

The Marching Gate was the southern gate of the outer Aachen city wall. It is one of the mightiest surviving city gates in Western Europe. Its construction began around 1257 and was probably completed shortly after 1300.[1] With the Marching Middle Gate, also known as the Burtscheider Middle Gate, it had a counterpart in the inner ring of walls, the so-called Barbarossa Wall, which had a total of ten gates.

Aachen City Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The town hall next to the cathedral can be described as the second imposing building. In the first half of the 14th century, the citizens of Aachen established a new town hall under the leadership of their acting mayor Gerhard Chorus (1285-1367) as a sign of their civil liberty. Until then, the mid-13th century Grashaus had served as the town hall.

Zum Postwagen (Aachen)

Highlight • Restaurant

The Postwagen is one of the oldest and most famous inns in Aachen's old town, located directly on the market square next to the town hall. Its origins date back to the 17th century, and the small wooden building that has survived to this day is considered a rare example of earlier architecture. At the beginning of the 20th century, the buildings were structurally connected and modernized, before the name "Postwagen" became established. After its destruction in World War II, the inn was faithfully rebuilt and reopened in 1949. Today, it presents itself as a traditional Aachen restaurant serving regional cuisine in a historic setting.

Aachen's oldest fountain, known as the Charlemagne Fountain or Market Fountain, has a turbulent history. In 1792, the statue of Charlemagne was seized by French troops as war booty, but it returned to Aachen in 1804. From 1969 to 2014, the original figure was displayed in the Coronation Hall of the Town Hall before finding its current home with the opening of the Centre Charlemagne – Aachen's New City Museum.

The fountain now features a replica of Charlemagne in a bronze bowl weighing approximately six tons. This distinctive shape has earned the people of Aachen the affectionate nickname "Eäzekomp" – meaning "pea bowl" – by which the fountain is still known today.

A beautiful and worth-seeing fountain. A great photo opportunity.

Because the fountain water is fed by thermal springs, it doesn't freeze in winter. Many fountain tours (or outdoor fountains in general) are hardly impressive during the winter months when parts dry out or are frozen. Here, the water remains flowing—and thus the "circulation" remains visible.
