Rest area at the Former Oberteich

Highlight • Rest Area

From the bench, the gaze sweeps over a flat meadow where the "Oberteich", which was drained around 1840, once spread out. In the middle of the meadow, a small thicket can still be seen, where the pathetic remnant of the former Oberteich hides, fed by the Piepenbek coming from the direction of Voßkaten. This pond was one of a total of over 60 fish ponds that the Cistercian monks of the former Reinfeld monastery created in the 12th century.

Schwarzer Teich

Highlight • Lake

The Black Pond and the Hausgraben actually form a double pond that is divided by a dam. The two ponds are fed by the Piepenbek, which rises north in the Fohlenkoppel forest. Steinhöferstrasse runs along the embankment with the monastery wall. The bank area of the Black Pond is largely designated as a landscape protection area and is not accessible to visitors. But there is a somewhat hidden resting place with benches at the junction of Segeberger Straße, which offers a beautiful view over the pond right on the bank.

Historic Monastery Wall of Reynevelde

Highlight • Historical Site

This section of the monastery wall along Steinhöferstraße is the only surviving structure of the former Cistercian monastery "Reynevelde" or Latin "Purus Campus". The monastery was founded in 1186. The monastery church was consecrated in 1236, meaning the stone buildings were completed 50 years after its founding. Previously, there was a provisional wooden structure that is said to have stood south of here on the Klosterberg. The monastery was secularized in 1582 under the Danish King Frederick II and handed over to Duke Johann the Younger of Plön. He had the buildings demolished by 1599. The demolition material was used to build the ducal castle north of the Hausgraben. The mighty monastery church was initially left standing, but in 1635 the dam of the Herrenteich broke, and the monastery church was destroyed. The monastery wall, built between the 12th and 16th centuries, originally extended from the Herrenteich along today's Hamburger Straße to the west and Alter Garten to the south, returning to the Herrenteich in the east. The former monastery portal is presumed to be near Karpfenplatz. The remaining section of the brick wall here is about 90 m long, 2.20 m high, and 63 cm thick, built from fired bricks in the Gothic monk bond with support pillars inside and out. With the construction of the Danish administrative building in 1775, a coach house was added, whose rear wall consists of a part of the monastery wall. In 1974, the State Building Authority of Lübeck, despite monument protection and without consultation with local authorities, overturned the western section of the wall, dating from the 12th century, with excavators and replaced it with a modern replica.
