Not too long ago, Wuppertal was considered one of the most bicycle-unfriendly cities in Germany. However, the city in the Bergisches Land has recently been enjoying increasing popularity among cyclists. The main reason for this is the Nordbahntrasse, a former railway line that has been converted into a cycle path, winding "over the rooftops" of the elongated city from Vohwinkel to Sprockhövel.

At the height of the Elberfeld district lies one of the heartpieces of the route, the Mirke station. The listed building is the cultural center of the northern district and provides a home for many colorful projects. In this old station building, you will find the Café Hutmacher. Here you can take a cozy break inside and, in good weather, also outside. In addition to coffee and cake, delicious snacks from the stone oven or grill are available from spring to autumn. If you prefer a beer to go with the Flammkuchen from the oven, you are well advised with the house beer "Bärtig Bräu". Whether coffee, soda, or beer: with everything, attention is paid to ensuring that it is produced fairly and locally.

The whole experience is rounded off by numerous events such as readings, concerts, or design markets, which mainly take place on weekends at the station. If you don't own a bike yourself, Mirke station is also a good starting point for you. It is easily accessible by public transport and houses a free bicycle rental service. For a small deposit, you can set off cycling from there.

The route should be familiar: old railway line converted for use as a cycle path and footpath in some spectacular routes (viaducts, tunnels), first-class asphalt.

For fans of accelerated mobility, it should be mentioned that the NBT is mostly heavily frequented (cyclists, walkers, joggers, skaters, dogs, young people, etc. pp.) because of its leisure value (and lack of alternatives in the city). The route is therefore not suitable for speed records (or only on rainy weekday mornings in winter).

The bridge of the samba route leads over the tiger enclosure, from there you can watch the tigers and part of the green zoo well.
