Kappeln Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Wooden bridge from Eckernförde The wooden bridge serves as a pedestrian bridge and connects the district of Borby with the center. The wooden bascule bridge is unique in Schleswig-Holstein. It was created after the great storm surge of 1872 to restore the destroyed connection between the two parts of the city and its basic features have been preserved to this day. A special feature are the many padlocks that are now attached to the metal struts of the bridge. The locks, often with names engraved on them, symbolize the love between the people whose names are written on them.

Eckernförde Harbor

Highlight • Structure

Here you can see fishing trawlers with freshly caught cod and herring, proud tall ships and sleek yachts.

The port used to be used primarily for handling grain and fertilizers. Today, marinas with sailing and motor yachts dominate the picture. A wooden bascule bridge, which can be opened for passing ships if necessary, connects Eckernförde with the northern district of Borby. At the same time, it divides the port into the inner port and the outer port.
The larger outer harbor is protected with its outer harbor by two moles.

The fish market takes place every first Sunday of the month in the picturesque harbor, in August on the second Sunday

Upper Eimer Lake

Highlight • Lake

The original stream bed was restored for DM 56,000 through the renaturation of the upper reaches of the Lachenbach. On December 6, 1990, the nature conservation officer of the city of Eckernförde, Michael Packschies, explained to the press representatives present how the Dramms Koppel depression, through which the Lachenbach flows, is being transformed into a wetland area: All that is needed is a plastic mortar bucket (cost: 5.90 DM), which prevents the water from draining away. Packschies then wedged the bucket in an inspection shaft in the depression, the original drain of the cased creek was closed and the water began to back up. In January 1991 the water level reached its highest level, the water flowed off via a natural overflow. The water depth of the Eimersee is up to 1.5 meters.

Moderate hike. Good basic condition required. Easily walkable paths. No special skill required. The starting point of the tour can be reached by public transport.

Unfortunately, this unprocessed Komoot proposal was a little too long, along which the path ran along roads and fences. The Hemmelmarker See - as beautiful as it is - is either not accessible or the shore is sealed off in private hands. The individual, quite beautiful views do not raise the overall grade of the tour above "sufficient".

On the other side of Eckernförde you can find - if you want - the Eimersee!
The detailed story can be found at:

One thing should be revealed in advance, in fact almost 30 years ago (1990) - a bucket played a very large, if not THE 'decisive' role in the creation of the lake!
A paddling tour in …
