The ensemble built by French prisoners of war was completed in 1916 during the First World War. It consists of the Paretz lock, the pump house and the tower of the transformer station and is now a listed building because of its harmonious aesthetics and the technically sophisticated construction of the pump system.
The system on the Paretz-Nauener Canal was used to improve the Havelland lynx, which King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia had already initiated in 1718. Controlled drainage and irrigation using ditches and drainage systems was intended to enable continuous agricultural use of the occasionally flooded fields. In the Havelland region alone, 500 km² of arable land was gained as a result of the melioration. The water from the drainage collected at the lowest point of the terrain and had to be pumped from here into a higher drain or canal. This work was carried out on the Paretz lock by powerful pumps: powered by electric motors, they could move up to 22,000 m³ of water in one hour. In the 1970s they were replaced by two modern submersible pumps.
The pumping station impresses with its individual construction and technical equipment that testifies to its high quality. Thanks to a donation, the Historical Paretz Association was able to renovate the pump house in 2006 in accordance with the monument requirements.
