The former town hall pharmacy was once located at Marktstraße 14.

The most famous pharmacist to have produced medicine here in Mölln was Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy.

Around 1800, he lived in this house with his family. Local folklore makes no mention of a specific Mölln residence for the jester. It must be assumed that the pharmacy and the Holy Spirit Hospital are merely literary elements from the book "Thyl Eulenspiegel."

According to this account, Eulenspiegel lived in Mölln first in the pharmacy before his death and then in the Holy Spirit Hospital. The pharmacy can only refer to the former town hall pharmacy at Marktstraße 14.

The half-timbered building was erected at the beginning of the 17th century on medieval foundations. The prime location of the house with a cellar within Mölln's topography suggests that it was originally the residence of a family belonging to the patrician upper class. Therefore, it is possible that the attribution to Eulenspiegel is based on a tradition that preserved knowledge of the "bourgeois" residence of the presumed bailiff, Tilo dictus Ulenspegel.

The classic fountain and landmark of Mölln is the Eulenspiegel fountain.
Nobody likes to have their weaknesses, mistakes, and vanities reflected in a mirror, especially not by a fool. Till Eulenspiegel showed no mercy and, in particular, denounced the dilapidated conditions of late medieval society. He exposed self-satisfied citizens, the corrupt nobility, and even the church. The myth surrounding Till Eulenspiegel and his numerous pranks has persisted for several hundred years, although evidence of his actual existence is difficult to provide. The oldest edition of the Eulenspiegel book, by the customs clerk and writer Hermann Bote, dates back to 1510.

Historic Town Hall, Mölln

Highlight • Historical Site

The old town hall of Mölln was built from 1373 in the brick Gothic style. In addition to the Lübeck town hall, it is the only Gothic town hall in Schleswig-Holstein.
