Celtic Axle Nail Sculpture at Bastenhaus

Highlight • Monument

The artists Uli Lamp and Motz Tietze have created an impressive work of art made of steel for the large inner surface.

The replica of the Celtic axle nail, which was discovered in 1962 on the Donnersberg plateau and is considered a unique find of its kind, is six meters high. He is leaning on a wheel fragment that not only refers to the coats of arms of the Donnersbergkreis and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, but also to the roundabout as a traffic junction, as Motz Tietze noted.

According to Uli Lamp, implementing the designs was "a technical challenge". They "worked with Stone Age methods to bring this work of art into shape," he said and quoted Karl Valentin with a wink: "Art is beautiful, but it is a lot of work."

The geographical center of the Donnersbergkreis is recognized accordingly and the central traffic junction at the Bastenhaus, which has been allowing traffic to flow more quickly and safely since 2017, has undergone an artistic upgrade.

Zellertal Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The idea of building the "Zellertal Memorial" was born soon after the First World War and the memorial was officially inaugurated on July 15, 1928. It is dedicated to "the Palatinate and Hessian fallen soldiers as they fought and died together in enemy territory".

Each of the 6 pillars of the pillared hall stands for a Zellertal community: Einselthum, Harxheim, Niefernheim, Zell, Mölsheim and Wachenheim. Due to its special location, its openwork, upward-pointing shape and its height of 15 meters and a diameter of 6.5 meters, it still has a special long-distance effect.

Every year on the “Memorial Day” in November, citizens of all Zellertal communities meet for a joint commemoration ceremony for those who died in the two world wars.

The town hall of the community of Kriegsheim stood on this square. It was demolished in 1986. After that, the "village square" was created, which is often used as a meeting place and experiences an annual highlight at the Kriegsheimer Kerwe with the Kerwe speech.
