Löpsinger Gate and City Wall Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

The Löpsinger Gate was completed in 1379 and originally served as a defensive structure in the north of the city. Today, the gate tower houses the City Wall Museum, which opened in 1987 and documents the history of Nördlingen's city fortifications on six floors.

The Deininger Gate looks somewhat similar to the Löpsinger Gate.
In front of the gate, you can still see the earlier course of the outer fortifications on the plan.

Nördlingen City Wall

Highlight • Monument

Walk around Nördlingen on the city wall. You get a lot of insights into the city. Several climbs, not only on the towers, offer the opportunity to explore the city center or to visit one of the many restaurants and cafes. An exciting place for children too!

Nördlingen City Wall Walk

Highlight • Historical Site

If you want to wander around the city on the city wall, you will find the stairs at one of the gates. On top of the preserved city wall from 1327, an approximately 2.7 km long circular path leads around the old town of Nördlingen. The city gates are named after the places outside the city. The towns of Baldingen, Löpsingen, Deiningen and Reimlingen have given four gates their names. Only the fifth, the Berger Tor, is not named after a place, but after a mountain, the Friedhofsberg.

The Baldinger Gate looks a bit crippled compared to the other gates, which is because the tower has collapsed. 🤷‍♂️

Nördlingen City Wall

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

Nördlingen is surrounded by Germany's only completely preserved and fully accessible city wall. A walk on the 2.7-kilometer-long defense system offers a wonderful view of the medieval streets. If you climb the "Daniel" - the bell tower of the late Gothic St. George's Church - you have a wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Ries, a meteorite crater that was formed about 14.5 million years ago. To this day, the tower keeper on the "Daniel" calls out his watchman's call "So G’sell so" over the city throughout the year.

How nice!
All the old half-timbered houses surrounded by the city wall.
It's all worth a visit!

The second round on the almost completely walk-on battlements impresses again and again with views of the tangled roofs of the city .... the "Daniel", the steeple of the mighty St. George's Church, towers over the city and always attracts everyone's attention.

Nice walk around the Nördlingen city wall. The wall is mostly covered, which makes it fun even in bad weather. It feels like you're just walking straight ahead the whole time. You don't notice that you're walking in circles... :)

At the Löpsinger Tor there is a museum on various levels in the tower for a 3€ entrance fee.

This is one of the few city walls that can be walked around completely

... after we have filled Jan's student shack with a trunk load and various purchases, Frieder and me are slowly heading north again ... First stop is Nördlingen, which has a completely preserved medieval city wall. Since we are staying for a few days - in a beautiful B&B - we took time for two extensive city wall tours ... …

Nördlingen was formerly a free imperial city with a historic city center and a well-preserved, walkable city wall.
You can't really get lost, take one of the many stairs and then go around the outside once.
