St. Bartholomäus Chapel Salem

Highlight • Religious Site

The St. Bartholomew's Chapel in Salem stands on a small hill and is therefore easy to see from afar. At the top of the church you have beautiful views of Salem and the lake from the elevated position.

The chapel is first mentioned in the visitation report of 1581, but is probably much older. Today's brick building was built in 1838 according to plans by the Copenhagen master builder Hansen. The altar window, which was designed in 1979 according to a design by the Hamburg artist Claus Wallner, shows the risen Jesus in conversation with Thomas and the other ten disciples. The platinum cross and the two platinum candlesticks on the altar were gifts from Claus Wallner's widow.

Northeast of the small lakes and moors on the slope of the Ice Age meltwater valley, between the partially silted-up forest lake and the up to 8 m steep natural slope, there is a fortified farmstead, of which almost nothing can be seen today for laypersons.
It consists of an almost flat area with a length of 100 m and a width of 45 m. The forest lake, the ditches and ramparts, the arch wall and a steep embankment suggest a very well-fortified courtyard. A bridge of earth to the north indicates an entrance. The assignment of two trough-like depressions within the complex has not been clarified. On the other hand, red to black brickwork found on the walls of buildings probably dates from the time when the farm was used. The clay material was probably bricked up when it was destroyed by fire. Stalks of cereals and forest grasses were found as a thinning of the clay. Clearly visible fingerprints were found on a piece of lime mortar the size of a child's fist.
The area of the former Feldmark "Steinecken Breede" could be managed from the farm. The fields are still marked on old maps.
One can assign the farm to the Knights of Salem. Only the nobility had or took the original right to fortify buildings.

View of the Schwarze Kuhle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Unfortunately, there are no unobstructed views here because the view is always obstructed by many trees, but the views are still worthwhile from the elevated position.
