Historic Center of Lagos

Highlight • Historical Site

Fortunately, the center of Lagos is traffic-calmed, so that nothing stands in the way of a tranquil city stroll.

City Walls of Lagos

Highlight • Historical Site

The city walls of Lagos, built under the reigns of Manuel I, João III and Filipe I, surrounded the entire city to protect it from pirates and enemy fleets. They were restored in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator.
Due to their state of preservation and their length, they are one of the most important city walls in the Algarve. Particularly impressive are the bastions and gates (de Santa Maria, da Praça de Armas, da Conceição, da Alcaria or das Freiras, da Porta dos Quartos, de Santo Amaro or do Paiol, de São Francisco and da Torre do Trem), which offer beautiful views of the city. Lagos has a well-preserved old town with historical sights, churches and museums, many restaurants, cafes and shops.

We love the lively but still cozy city of Lagos with 30,000 inhabitants. It is in a great location at the mouth of the Ribeira de Bensafrim and not only has one of the longest sandy beaches in the Algarve but also several beautiful sandy bays lying on steep cliffs. The old town streets are cobbled and many restaurants and …

Actually wanted to hike the Ponte de Piedale. Didn't get a parking space at first and when we finally parked further away, it started to rain. So we decided to at least look at Lagos and after a long search for a parking space there, it stopped raining. Is a pretty town. Was worth it.

After a bit of hanging out on the beach during the day, in the evening we took another small trip and made the old town of Lagos unsafe. If you park at the marina, it costs a reasonable fee, further up in the city center we later discovered a large free parking lot. Bars, pubs and restaurants are crowded together …

Lagos is a great city but here again there is far too little time and the desire to explore every corner.
