Wilkanów Meteorite Memorial

Highlight • Monument

On March 22, 1841, at 3:30 p.m., the residents of Wilkanów working in the surrounding fields heard three strong booms similar to cannon shots. The explosion could be heard for many kilometers. Immediately afterward, a loud whistle could be heard, growing from the west, and something heavy fell nearby. In a small depression, witnesses found a 30-ounce stone (about 930 g). A second, smaller specimen was found later between the villages of Heinrichau and Schloin. The Wilkanów meteorite is a geologically gray veined chondrite, currently located in the most important geological museums in the world. On the 161st anniversary of that event, a three-ton boulder with a plaque commemorating the meteorite's fall was placed on a bend in the county road in Wilkanów.

Glinianki Lake

Highlight • Lake

A lake created after a former clay quarry. From the west, you can reach it by a road made of concrete blocks. There is a viewpoint and benches there. On the north side, there are several neglected clearings with a place for a bonfire or barbecue.

Jagodowe Wzgórze

Highlight • Forest

Jagodowe Wzgórze is the highest peak in Zielona Góra (211m above sea level). The peak is completely covered with forest, so there are no long-distance views, but it is worth the effort and the climb!

Bismarck Tower

Highlight • Monument

Wilkanowska Tower stands on Wilkanowska Mountain (221m above sea level). It is one of the Bismarck Towers, erected in the years 1869-1934 in the then German Reich and Austria-Hungary in honour of Otto von Bismarck. In Poland, out of 40 such towers, 17 remain. Extraordinary! You can rarely climb the tower, but apparently you can even see the top of Śnieżka from it!

Wilkanowska Tower

Highlight • Monument

Brick tower from 1902. It was built in honour of Otto von Bismarck, who united the German states. In total, about 240 such towers were built. They were observation towers and the tower standing at the highest point in the vicinity of Zielona Góra had such a purpose. In good weather conditions, you could see Głogów, about 60 km away, from it. Today, it is no longer an observation tower. It has been closed and is only used as a fire observation tower. The medallion with Bismarck's head and his coat of arms located on the tower wall replaced the emblem of the State Forests, and the name "Bismarck Tower" was changed to "Wilkanow Tower"
