Milchkannentor (Stągiewna Gate)

The Milk Can Gate is a city gate on the Gdańsk Reservoir Island. The round bastions were built in the 15th century. The higher bastion is 28 m high, 13 m long, and its walls are 4 m thick. It is covered with a conical tiled roof. The lower bastion is only 10 m high and 8 m wide. It is covered with a flat pent roof. The towers were damaged in World War II. The Gdansk artist cooperative “Arpo” rebuilt it in the 1980s. At that time the towers were connected with a wooden gallery.

The tips of the gables are decorated with bronze sculptures of exploding cannonballs, clearly indicating the building's purpose.[1] Two portals bearing the coat of arms of Gdańsk are symmetrically integrated into the gables on either side. A niche forms the central element of the facade, containing a statue of Athena. In this niche, the builders inscribed the dates of construction and renovation (1605, 1768, 1887).

In front of the building is a well that was connected to the armory in the basement.

The armory's rooms are now used by the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts. From the 1920s until about 2007, the ground floor also housed shops.

Coming from Warsaw via Toruń, we didn't arrive in Gdansk until the evening – but curiosity got the better of us.
The faithfully rebuilt city center is simply stunning! It was an absolute "wow" moment for both of us, and the setting sun was a dream – both along the Motlawa River, at the Long Market, and in Mariacka Street …
