Ancient Forest Trails of Garajonay National Park

Highlight • Forest

Anyone who likes forest bathing will get their money's worth here. An absolutely magical place that has rightly been made a national park.

Nuestra Señora de Lourdes Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

A multilingual sign explains the founding story:

"On a Sunday in August 1935, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes was founded. The fact that we have a sanctuary in El Cedro is thanks to an English lady named Florence Stephan Parry. Mrs. Stephan, or Dona Florencia, as she was also known, came to La Gemora to teach the children of Mario Novaro Parodi, an Italian who had married into an Italian family on the island and owned a cannery in La Cantera, in the municipality of Alajero. When Mrs. Stephan retired, she had the Casa de la Paz built in Hermigua and set about realizing her dream of building a sanctuary in the middle of the El Cedro forest."

View of Hermigua and Las Casas

Highlight • Viewpoint

Hermigua is considered to be the valley with the most water in La Gomera, as it is supplied all year round by the Rio del Cedro. In addition to little tourism, there is mainly agriculture here. The mostly sunny side of the valley was terraced to the highest level that could still be irrigated. Among other things, potatoes, papayas, bananas, grains, legumes, pumpkins, beans and grapes are grown.

The Garajonay National Park, which partly belongs to the municipality of Hermigua, is only six kilometers away to the east and is definitely worth a visit.

When the weather is good, not only La Gomera shows itself at its best and most beautiful, but also Tenerife and the summit of Teide. Here you can see the entire length of Tenerife. Always worth a trip to this place.

Here it is still the original laurel forest in the Alto de Garajonay.
The forests in the park are a relic of the Tertiary subtropical laurel forests that were also common in Europe and the Mediterranean (Southern Europe, North Africa and Southwest Asia). While these plants disappeared in Europe during the ice ages (in the Mediterranean area during the last ice age), this plant community was able to survive in part on La Gomera, on the other Canary Islands, as well as on Madeira and the Azores (Macaronesian Islands).
