Monument to Ibiza's Corsairs

The obelisk in memory of the corsairs is located in the port and is unique. Apart from the English, who built an obelisk in tribute to the famous buccaneer Francis Drake, the one in the port of Ibiza is the only one in the world.
The monument was designed by the Catalan architect Augusto Font and inaugurated in 1915. It is a tribute from the Ibizans to their corsairs, who often risked their lives to protect the inhabitants. At that time, Antonio Riquer defeated a ship with a Gibraltarian flag under the command of a famous pirate of the time: Miguel Novelli, 'the Pope'. He was a British corsair and his crew and weapons were similar to those of the Ibizans were far superior.
