Freedom Road: Štrbské Pleso to Tatranská Polianka

Nowadays, Cesta Slobody links Podbanské in the westernmost part of Spiš and ends 67 km further, in Łysa Polana, a border crossing with Poland. In its great part it leads over the forests limit and offers splendid views of the High Tatras, Sub-Tatra Basin and Low Tatras. It’s a state road, but has a wide roadside that makes it comfy to cycle (except for Kotlina - Javorina section in Belianske Tatry in the East).
What made it far more scenic that it used to be, were the terrible 2004 and 2014 hurricanes that devastated the forests, covering the Road with meters of timber at some places. The forests (National Park) are slowly recovering but it will take decades if not centuries.

Highlight • Settlement
The development of the city dates back mainly to the nineteenth century, when Jan Rainer expanded the settlement with sanatorium buildings: Flora (in 1839), the Swiss House and Bellevue (1850) and others. It should be mentioned that later, on the occasion of the World Ski Championships in 1970, large concrete buildings were crammed into the architectural gems, which slightly disturbed the idyllic character of Stary Smokovec.
The town also lost some of its charm on November 19, 2004, due to a hurricane that almost completely destroyed the surrounding forests (area of at least 14,000 hectares). The Slovaks were removing the damage for as long as 2 years. Due to the radical change of the landscape, a permit was issued for the expansion of the already existing, wide ski network.
