Los Guindos Chimney

Highlight • Monument

This chimney, at the time the tallest chimney in Spain at almost 100 metres, belonged to “Los Guindos”, a mineral metallurgy company. The factory, which began operations in 1922, was used to melt and laminate lead from the mines in the province of Jaén and was in operation until November 1979.

Today this chimney is a striking landmark on the coast of Málaga and a relic of the city's industrial past. It not only represents the history of the Los Guindos district, but also the economic development of the region in the 20th century. The area around the chimney has been integrated into a promenade and is now a popular destination and a great photo point!

Málaga West Coastal Cycle Route

Highlight • Cycleway

The coastal cycle route west of Malaga is a scenic and well-developed cycle route that continues along the Costa del Sol. This route heads west from Malaga through several coastal towns and offers wonderful views of the Mediterranean, sandy beaches and beautifully designed promenades.

The cycle route is gravel on this section, otherwise mostly asphalted and well signposted. It runs partly on separate cycle lanes, partly on quiet roads or along beaches or promenades.

Guadalhorce River Footbridge

Highlight • Bridge

It is the longest pedestrian bridge in Europe, with 270 meters. It passes over the mouth of the Guadalhorce river and several official routes from Malaga and the Costa del Sol coincide with it.

The Rio Guadalhorce is the largest river in the province of Málaga and flows into the Mediterranean southwest of the city of Málaga. The mouth of the Guadalhorce is an ecologically valuable area and is known as the Paraje Natural Desembocadura del Guadalhorce, a protected nature reserve.

The Guadalhorce is a typical Mediterranean river. It rises in the Betic Cordillera and flows through an agricultural valley. Before its mouth, the river divides into two branches that shape the delta and the lagoon landscape. In the past, there were floods that were mitigated by river regulation and the construction of dams. Nevertheless, the renaturation and protection of the estuary is a focus of regional environmental policy.

There are numerous trails around the mouth of the Guadalhorce. On the trails closest to the lagoons, cycling has been prohibited since 2020 due to its degree of protection, but there are many alternatives going parallel to the river.
