Varna Palace

Highlight • Monument

Varna Palæet (Today Odd Fellow Palæet Varna, Aarhus) is a forest restaurant in Marselisborg Forest, south of central Aarhus. It was built in 1908-1909 and inaugurated in 1909 in connection with the National Exhibition in Aarhus.

The architecture was hotly debated when it was built, and it was feared that the building would disfigure the forest. The architect had to make some changes before the project was approved. After the erection of the building there was no criticism.

Varna Palæet is named after the Bulgarian city and fortress of Varna on the Black Sea. This is because a former owner of the Marselisborg estate, Baron Christian C.N. Gersdorff, had taken part in Russian military service on the Black Sea coast and therefore (in the early 1800s) named the watermill on the site after him.

Varna Palæet now houses Odd Fellow Lodges and the Varna Restaurant.

Marselisborg Deer Park

Highlight • Natural

Marselisborg Deer Park is not a deer park in the original sense as it is not intended for deer hunting. The idea is more like a small safari park but only presents a few common species with no exotic animals. Sika deer were originally introduced to graze the winding open forest hills, but later deer and wild boar were added.

Marselisborg Deer Park

Highlight • Natural

A beautiful place. Suitable for children. Here you go through two heavy doors into the enclosure (which is very large) and the animals come towards you. I didn't see any wild boars, but I was only here for a short time and it's great that you can touch the animals. Of course you should be considerate!

July 1, 2024,DK: Aarhus - Uendelige Bro + Marselisborg Dyrehave 🥾📷
To make the most of the day, we continued past the Uendelige Bro (Infinity Bridge) and along the beach. We also crossed the Marselisborg Dyrehave/Park and got a few nice shots in front of our lens. Some of the animals are almost tame.
