Bennerley Viaduct Access Construction

Highlight • Structure

Bennerley Viaduct is currently only accessed from the west end (the canal side) with construction work to build a new access ramp at the east end. There's no way to cross the viaduct until this work is done, with no apparent completion date. To cross the river and canal you need to detour slightly to the north along some small but rideable gravel tracks. It's doable on 28mm tyres.

Great walk or ride or run if you like over the new refurbished Bennerley viaduct Awesworth. Stunning views day or evening. Very windy today 👊🏻

Bennerley Viaduct viewpoint

Highlight • Historical Site

Great viewing point of the Bennerley viaduct situated on the side of the Nottingham canal. The viaduct once carried the Great Northern railway between Nottingham Victoria and Derby Friar Gate. Now one of only 2 wrought iron viaducts in England with long term plans to restore the structure and to link it into the cycle network. Whilst no official access to the viaduct, many people climb the embankments at each end and walk across the structure. Not possible to take a bike across (unless you carry it the whole way). The restoration plans have stalled due to lack of funds. More information at friendsofbennerleyviaduct.wordpress.com

Nottingham Canal Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

The Nottingham Canal is a canal in the English counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. As built, it comprised a 14.7-mile long main line between the River Trent just downstream of Trent Bridge in Nottingham and Langley Mill in Derbyshire.

Swingate Water Tower

Highlight • Other

Just outside the city, a tower stands at nearly 100 feet that helped bring drinking water into Nottingham.

Built more than 70 years ago, the Swingate Water Tower dominates the skyline around the town Kimberley just off the A610.

A failing reservoir further north in the county at Watnall prompted the Nottingham Corporation and The City of Nottingham Water Department to seek another way to bring water from the Derwent Valley, treat it, and supply it to taps in the city.

Open daily from 9.30 - 4pm. This cafe is housed inside old horse riding stables and is incredibly cute. Great oat milk flat white 👌
