Torside Dam Spillway

Highlight • Lake

Torside Dam was completed in the early 1970s to create Torside Reservoir for water supply. The earth-fill dam is approximately 1,800 meters long and 35 meters high, effectively holding back the reservoir's waters. The reservoir supports a variety of wildlife, making it an important site for both recreation and environmental conservation.

Torside Reservoir

Torside Reservoir is the largest man-made lake in Longdendale in north Derbyshire. It was constructed by John Frederick Bateman between April 1849 and July 1864 as part of the Longdendale chain to supply water from the River Etherow to the urban areas of Greater Manchester.

Torside Reservoir

Torside Reservoir was constructed by John Frederick Bateman from 1849 to 1864 to supply water to Greater Manchester. The Trans Penine Trail runs around the reservoir taking the route of the first railway line to link Manchester and Sheffield. Located in the Peak District National Park, their are toilets and picnic benches at the reservoir.

Nice riding on the Longdendale trail. Nothing difficult so a nice trail for families with kids. Can get very busy so pick your time well. Weekends is obviously always relatively busy. Nice views all along the trail.

Woodhead Station and Tunnels

Highlight • Historical Site

The station was opened on 8 April 1844 by the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway. It was served by stopping passenger trains operating on the route from Manchester London Road to Sheffield Victoria.

The station was later operated by the Great Central Railway and the London and North Eastern Railway.

A new station was opened in 1953 by the Eastern Region of British Railways on a different site in conjunction with the opening of the new Woodhead Tunnel and electrification of the line. The station was closed on 27 July 1964 but the line remained open for passengers trains until 1970 and to freight traffic until 1981.

This lovely section of gravel takes you along Woodhead, Torside, Rhodeswood, Valehouse and Bottoms reservoirs. Following the former Woodhead railway line, the trail is leisurely and scenic.
