Old windmill near Groß Escherde

The Dutch windmill, located on the north side of Stöckumer Straße (B1) and about 200 meters from the Nobiskrug, was built in 1866/67 by the Groß Escherde miller Hermann Behrens. The name of this mill, built of bricks, goes back to Dutch mill builders. The characteristic feature of this type of mill is the rotatable cap or hood placed on a wooden or brick tower, to which the sails are attached.

After the death of its first owner, the mill passed into the hands of various millers in the following period. As early as 1931, it was powered by a diesel engine, and the sail cross was already half removed at that time, and later completely.

After the mill operation ceased, the Protestant church community of Groß Escherde initially wanted to buy the building and convert it into a youth center. However, this plan failed because the estimated construction costs were considered too high by the regional church of Hanover, and the project was also not approved due to a lack of traffic safety.
Since 1980, the mill and its access path have been privately owned, the building is used as a residential house and is therefore not open for visits.
