Garbocz Ponds

Highlight • Lake

The areas between Żory and Orzesze are among the most picturesque in Upper Silesia. The luminous forests hide the blue eyes of the ponds, arranged in ancient centuries by the human hand on the Ruda River. Hence, this area is often called Palowice Lakeland - from the town of Palowice, located in its very center. The lake district is part of the Cistercian Landscape Compositions of Rudy Wielkie Landscape Park.

A few kilometers north of the center of Żory, in the forest, by the Gichta pond, there is a brick hoist tower operating here in the first half of the 19th century, the "Waleska" smelter. The tower, called the gichta, was used to pull the charge - i.e. bog iron ore, charcoal and fluxes - to a considerable height with a manual crane, in order to cover a nearby cylindrical blast furnace. The building was built in the 1830s on a plan similar to a square. It is 15 m high, the interior dimensions are 610 by 775 cm. The walls are almost a meter thick.

Ramża Meteorological Radar

Highlight • Monument

Ramża, often called Ramżula, is the highest, 325 m above sea level, natural hill on the Rybnik Plateau, which stretches between the valleys of the Oder and the Vistula, in the south of the Silesian Voivodeship.
The meteorological radar
At the beginning of the 21st century, the forested Ramża embankment attracts the eye from even the distant surroundings of Silesia with its high tower on which the most modern meteorological radar in Poland has been installed. The radar on Ramża was placed in 1995. Its owner remains the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Warsaw. The radar is one of eight devices of this type, dispersed throughout the country, whose task is to warn against violent weather phenomena. It monitors an area within a radius of 200, 300 km by studying the amount of water in the air, so you can predict the intensity of precipitation.
Meteor crash
In 2010, the first device operating here, the Meteor 360AC, broke down. The repair costs turned out to be enormous, so it was decided to equip the tower in Ramja with new equipment. Currently, the meteorological monitoring of Silesia is provided by the Meteor 1600C radar with a Klystron transmitter, the most modern in Poland. The device allows to distinguish between types of precipitation (rain, snow, drizzle, hail) and forecast their intensity. A total of 8 meteorological radars are in operation in Poland.
