Cistercian Abbey in Rudy

Highlight • Religious Site

A place that every lover of traveling in Upper Silesia should definitely see at least once.
The Cistercian Abbey in Rudy (German: Zisterzienserkloster Groß Rauden) - a Romanesque-Gothic abbey in Rudy in the Racibórz district, in the Silesian Province. Today, the abbey, owned by the Diocese of Gliwice, functions as a Cistercian Monastery and Palace Complex, combining the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Humble and the Formation and Educational Center of the Gliwice Diocese. The facility is located on the Cistercian Trail.
Plans to establish a monastery in these areas appeared as early as 1238. Originally, the monastery was to be located in Woszczyce, but after the visit to these areas, the location was abandoned. This fact could also have been influenced by the Mongol invasion of 1241. In the middle of the century, the idea was returned to include it in the process of civilization development in Silesia. One of its animators was the Prince of Opole, Władysław, who granted city rights to a number of towns (including Gliwice and Bytom) and was the founder of several monasteries. Around 1253 he brought the Cistercians from Jędrzejów to Ruda (the exact date of the foundation is unknown, and the first document comes from 1258) and gave them seven nearby villages. The boundaries of the monastic estates were defined by the principle of a distance of three miles from: Gliwice, Racibórz and Koźle.

Narrow-gauge railway in Rudy

Highlight • Historical Site

Rudy offers an interesting attraction for narrow-gauge railway enthusiasts. Although the original station has not survived in its entirety, you can still see fragments of the old infrastructure, including the preserved locomotive shed building. The narrow-gauge line, which reached Rudy in the late 19th century, was an important element of local transport. The currently preserved section of the route can be an interesting point on a bicycle trip, allowing you to discover the history of the region.

Dam on Lake Rybnickie

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

Lake Rybnickie - a reservoir created by damming the waters of the Ruda and Nacyna rivers with a dam in Rybnik Stodoły, the reservoir was put into operation in December 1971. The dam is 13 meters high and 920 meters long, the top of the dam is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, the reservoir area is 4.5 km², capacity is 22 million m³, maximum depth is 9 meters, the length of the reservoir is 4.5 kilometers and the average width together with the steering wheel is 1200 meters. The reservoir was divided into 2 parts by a concrete embankment, the so-called "steering wheel" which extends from the power plant towards OSW Stodoły, it is an investment accompanying the large Rybnik power plant located on its banks, the water from the reservoir is used to cool the turbines. The power plant produces about 7% of the energy produced in Polish power plants. The reservoir also serves as an anti-flood function.
In the winter, the dam is closed.
