Here, you can compete with the racing cyclists for many kilometers on the best asphalt ;-). Riding away from the road in what is admittedly a rather desolate landscape has something almost meditative about it.

Old Rhine Dike Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very, very good surface, looks like a racetrack. Perfect as a flat piece for racing bikes.

Schwarzbach Lock - Ginsheim/Gustavburg 🚴‍♂️

The Schwarzbach is a right tributary of the Rhine in the Hessian Ried region, with a total length of 43 km, including the longer of its two upper reaches, the Gundbach. The old Schwarzbach Lock, a barrage with two double-leaf stem gates, was built in 1876 to close the gap in the dike created by the Schwarzbach in the "Erfelder Landdamm" in the event of flooding and to prevent the Rhine from backing up far into the Schwarzbach area.
At a certain high water mark in the Rhine, the barrage is closed, and the water accumulating in the Schwarzbach is pumped over the dike. 🚴‍♂️ At the turn of the century, a pumping station with a capacity of around 6 m³/s was initially built. After its decommissioning and demolition, a new pumping station with four pumping station pumps and a capacity of 12 m³/s was commissioned in 1979 and is still operated by the Schwarzbachgebiet-Ried Water Association. 🚴‍♂️ After significant operational and structural difficulties arose at the lock, particularly during the floods of 1983 and 1988, the Darmstadt Water Management Authority began construction of the new flood gate in 1991. The culvert has been operational since October 1993, thus ensuring flood protection.

The new Ginsheim flood gate connects the intersection of the "Beinegraben" (Beine ditch) with the dike structure and integrates the pumping station's stilling basin. The centerpiece of the Ginsheim flood gate is a 28-ton steel main roller gate. The reinforced concrete culvert has an opening measuring 12 by 3 meters. Additionally, a bypass has been installed for the maintenance work. A total of approximately 5,000 m³ of concrete and 650 t of reinforcing steel were installed. For reasons of nature and landscape conservation, the structure was integrated into the floodplain landscape with great sensitivity. 🚴‍♂️

Via Dammstrasse directly onto the Damm cycle path. The marina and ferry to the island of Langenaue are right next door.

Ginsheim Old Rhine Marina

Highlight • Structure

The small harbor with the ferry is worth a visit. Excellent gastronomic offers can also be found here, especially the Cafe Rheingenuss.
From here you can take the Johanna ferry to the Langenau peninsula. By bike you can reach an estate with gastronomy on the peninsula and later the Steindamm near Trebur and thus the "mainland".

Alt Astheim is the name of the street that runs through Alt-Astheim. Good to remember 😊 Lovingly restored half-timbered houses and other details such as a fountain or the beautifully designed city coat of arms can always be found along the road from the Petrus in Ketten church to the parking lot at the community center.
