Rocca di Ravaldino

Highlight • Castle

The Rocca di Ravaldino, also known as the Rocca di Caterina Sforza is a fortified citadel located in the city of Forlì. Of medieval origin but rebuilt and strengthened in the fourteenth century by both the Ordelaffi and Egidio Albornoz and enlarged during the fifteenth century, it is now partly used as an exhibition venue, while a large area houses the city's prisons.

The name Ravaldino derives from the presence of a fortification called Bonzanino, in all probability a ravelin (hence the subsequent evolution into Ravaldino), a sort of rudimentary fort, which stood in the area of the homonymous gate.

Schiavonia Gate

Highlight • Historical Site

Porta Schiavonia is a door in the walls that defended the city of Forlì in the past, and today it is the only door in the walls that still remains intact. It is located at the northern entrance of the city, right in front of the Montone river.

The Castle of the Captain of the Artillery stands in the suggestive hilly landscape of the Tuscan-Romagnolo pre-Apennines, near the Castrocaro spa. It is part of the fortified city of Terra del Sole, a rare example of an ideal Renaissance city, built in 1564 by order of Cosimo I de’ Medici. The castle is excellently preserved and is considered one of the most beautiful in the area.

Castrocaro, its fortress, its ancient village with its towers and narrow, bristling alleys. Suggestive.

Castle of the Governor or Captain of the Square

Seat of the customs officer after the disarmament of 1772, the Castle of the Governor or Captain of the Piazza is an integral part of the city-fortress of Terra del Sole and overlooks the Roman gate towards Forlì, one of the city entrances; it is characterized by an angled and stellar shape, like its "twin" that overlooks the other access door.

It includes the Captain's Quarter, the passage tunnel, the "night" and "rest" Guard Corps, the saltpetre, cannonballs and trestle trestles warehouse.

Publicly owned, it houses the Municipal Historical Archive in the mezzanine, which houses 1500 files including the acts of the court of first instance (which had its seat in the Palazzo Pretorio), the oldest document of which dates back to 1490. Here it is preserved almost for the entire criminal archive of the Tuscan Romagna Province, perhaps the most complete criminal archive in Italy. The "G. Rossini" Music School, the Choral Group, the Contrada di Borgo Romano and the Flag-wavers, Musicians and Men of Arms are located on the main floor.
