Gorizia/Nova Gorica

Highlight • Settlement

Gorizia / Nova Gorica is a special city in many ways and definitely worth a visit. The city is divided into two parts. Gorizia is the larger Italian part, Nova Gorica the Slovenian and smaller part. After the Treaty of Saint-Germain, the city, which until then belonged to Austria-Hungary, became Italian.

In May 1945 Tito advanced with his Yugoslav partisans to the Isonzo / Soca. In 1947, in the Peace of Paris, the new border between Italy and Yugoslavia was decided. The division of the city was sealed. The border was set arbitrarily along the railway line. Today, instead of barbed wire and high fences, colorful flower pots mark the border between Slovenia and Italy.

If you want to learn more about the history, you can find more information here: turismofvg.it/museums/provincial-museum-of-gorizia-first-world-war-museum

In 2025, the twin city, along with Chemnitz in Germany, will bear the title of European Capital of Culture.

Otherwise, Gorizia is just a beautiful, manageable city with nice cafes and restaurants, pedestrian zone and great opportunities for mountain biking in the area.

Solkan Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Salcano bridge is famous for being the bridge with the largest stone arch in the world.
Completed in the early 1900s, it was part of a series of bridges (worth visiting) and tunnels on the railway line that connected Vienna to the southern provinces of the empire.
Legend has it that, when the wooden scaffolding that allowed its construction was being removed, the dutiful Austrian engineer in charge of the construction site was observing the scene from a nearby cliff with a gun in his hand, ready to put an end to his life if the total lowering of the bridge arch had been greater than that foreseen by his calculations.
The engineer survived, not like the bridge blown up by the A-U themselves during the First World War...
